Against All Odds

Enzo Ferrari created the first car bearing his name in 1948, the 166S. In 1949 he added its successor, the 166MM (for Mile Miglia which the 166S had won). Lord Peter Selsdon, who had run the 24 Hours of Le Mans in two occasions entered a 166MM in the 1949 race, to be driven by Luigi Chinetti and Selsdon himself. Enzo Ferrari didn't think that his car could win the race since it had a small 2-liter engine, whereas the race favorites were mainly powered by 3 to 3.5 liter engines. However, the little 166MM managed to outlast the competition, giving Ferrari the first of many future wins. He had been driving for all 24 hours except for 72 minutes when Selsdon did his stint.
